El Salvador

El Salvador is both the smallest country on the American mainland and the most densely populated. In recent years, a relatively high degree of industrialization has taken place patterned after the maquiladoras of Mexico and the Dominican Republic. These low wage assembly plants have helped make El Salvador the most industrialized nation in Central America. The strides in economic development have been matched by political tranquility following a devastating civil war in the 1980s.
