Introduction

Welcome to LASER, a web site for middle and high school teachers and students who are learning about Latin America in social sciences and humanities classes. This site was designed by the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), International Studies and Programs at Michigan State University and MATRIX: The Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online

This site can be used to learn more about Latin America and the Caribbean countries, to obtain information to incorporate into their lessons about Latin America, to view actual sample lesson plans, materials, and ideas for teaching about Latin America and the Caribbean, and to access annotated and categorized resource lists that will help them take advantage of a vast universe of other resources about Latin America.

Teachers can access country fact sheets and short essays on Latin America written by MSU faculty. These, along with accompanying links and suggestions for additional materials, will help to quickly identify topics and materials that can be incorporate into lessons. We also provide a few sample lesson plans and links to web sites that provide Latin American and Caribbean related lesson plans. Teachers may use these lesson plans as they are, or simply select particular activities from them. We also provide a list of CLACS teaching materials we own, which can be checked out at our resource library to use in the classroom. Finally, on this web site teachers can access images and maps and other materials that can be projected or printed out for classroom use.

Students can access this site to compare information from their texts to a wide range of other academic resources, comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences with their own environment.

CLACS is a National Resource Centers funded by the U.S. Department of Education. As part of this outreach mission, CLACS acts as a resource base for teachers and the general public.
